The revolutionary poet and founder of Virasam, Varavara Rao was brought back from Pune to Hyderabad on Thursday, 30.8.2018 and put under house arrest , after the Supreme court order on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters hurriedly as the police whisked him into his residence, he alleged that the case against him was false.

“If the fight against fascist policies is called a conspiracy, then there cannot be a bigger conspiracy than this.”

Violence unfolded in Maharashtra during the Bhima –Koregaon 150th anniversary that Dalits planned to celebrate in a peaceful manner, when two Hindutva idealogues Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide instigated mobs. One person was killed and several injured in the violence that followed.

The double standards of the Pune police who have not arrested Bhide to date but have arrested five activists under a so-called huge conspiracy, throws up many questions that need to be answered by the Maharashtra police.

Incidentally, the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) has served a notice against the Maharashtra state for the arbitrary way in which the five activists were arrested, without following any proper protocol.
