By continuing the tradition set by his predecessor, Barack Obama of celebrating Diwali in the White House, Donald Trump took the opportunity to fraternise with the Hindu Association led by the Indian businessman, Sulabh Kumar who has been crucial in supporting his election campaign. Trump also re-affirmed his support to “Hindu-Americans” as he called them.

The personal celebration of Diwali by Trump was significant in the background that the President had for the first time broken a two-decade long Presidential tradition by not hosting Ramzan celebrations in the White House earlier this year.

”Today, we proudly celebrate this holiday in The People’s House. In so doing, we reaffirm that Indian-Americans and Hindu-Americans are truly cherished, treasured and beloved members of our great American family,”

He also praised Indian-Americans for their contributions to the United States and the world and said he greatly valued his strong relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Press was denied access to cover the Diwali celebrations.
