A 20 year old Muslim Youth was tied to a tree and beaten mercilessly for hours in Gumla village in Jharkhand. His crime was that he loved a Hindu girl in the neighbouring village. Mohammad Shalik, was a resident of Raza colony in Gumla town, and was beaten for having a relationship with a Hindu girl from a neighbouring village Soso.

The police said that the girl allegedly called the boy to meet her at Gumla town for the Ram Navami procession on Wednesday. The youth went to meet her on a scooter and dropped her home, when the Hindus assaulted him.
Police claim that they have arrested three persons for the crime and lodged an FIR against unnamed people. The Gumla Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Jha told reporters, “Though investigation is on, we were told by the villagers that the boy had been asked earlier not to meet the girl and never visit the village.”

Died on the way to hospital

The youth’s father Mohammad Minhak said that two persons came to his house on Wednesday to tell him that his son had been beaten and was tied in Soso village.

The father told the media,“I informed police immediately. When we reached the village, we found that my son was critically injured.” He was taken to Sadar hospital, from here he was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi but died on the way.

With the government –sponsored Anti- Romeo squads roaming about in these BJP-ruled states, with a licence to assault on suspicion, fear is now running high in the minority and backward communities.
