Women across the United States and other parts of the world went on strike on Wednesday (March 8th) in an International Women’s Day protest against inequality and gendered labour practices. Several women were arrested in New York outside ‘Trump Tower’ for civil disobedience.

The boycotts also caused some schools to close down and child care centres had to be shut down as women failed to come to work. In Dublin, Ireland, women marched the streets demanding reversal of the strict abortion laws.

“Day Without A Woman”

The strike was called, A Day Without a Woman” and it mainly reminded us of the silent role of women in labour where she was subjected to lesser wages, oppression, misogyny and sexual violence. They called it the invisiblisation of women’s work.

Similar strikes were held in London, distant South Korea and other parts of the world.

Trump subdued in his message

This is mostly the same women who spontaneously protested across continents against the new President of USA, Donald Trump on 21st January, soon after his swearing in. This time he took to Twitter with the subdued message, “On International Women’s Day, join me in honoring the critical role of women here in America & around the world.”
