The seventh and final phase of assembly elections are happening in Uttar Pradesh for 40 seats, including the prestigious seat of Varanasi, where the Prime Minister spent 3 days as the star campaigner of the BJP. Manipur is also witnessing the second and final phase of voting today, and the ‘woman of steel’ Irom Sharmila is contesting.

Forty assembly seats in Poorvanchal, or east UP will vote in the seventh round of polling in which the BJP and its main rival, the SP-Congress are both looking to make a comeback. So far the elections in the largest state of the country have not showed any overwhelming trend towards any party.

In 2012, the ruling Samajwadi Party bagged most of the seats except in Varanasi and Chandauli districts. The BJP, which was nowhere in the picture, is now banking heavily on the Modi alone and pulled out all stops in a nonstop campaign.

Another 3 days and we will know the results on March 11th.
