Voting for 51 seats and 617 candidates is underway in Uttar Pradesh today, in the 5th Phase. The districts include Amethi, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and this phase is crucial to the state, which has not shown any voting trends in the earlier four phases.

In the last election, the Samajwadi Party had won 37 seats, the BJP and Congress won five each while the Bahujan Samaj Party could only manage three. This time, the Samajwadi party and Congress have formed alliance and are fighting the elections, “to stop the communal narrative of the BJP.”

One of the keenly watched fight is in Amethi, between Garima Singh and Amita Singh. Garima is the first wife and Amita is the second wife of Sanjay Singh, a locally influential leader, given RS seat by Congress.

Ayodhya goes to polls today

The BJP candidate in Ayodhya is Ved Prakash Gupta who defected from BJP to Samajwadi Party to BSP and has now come back to BJP. He is generally disliked. The SP sitting MLA is his opponent Tej Narain Pandey, a Brahmin who enjoys goodwill among people.

If BJP wins Ayodhya, it clearly means the Brahmins, who are around 40,000 in the constituency, rallied behind a defector and a baniya to bring BJP back to power. It will be a vote for the Ram Mandir.
