There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for Padmavati, the film that was targeted from the outset by self-styled Rajput outfits like the Karni Sena with the background support of the Hindutva groups. The grouse was that it distorts Rajput history and dares to show a romantic angle between the Rajput queen, Rani Padmavati and the Delhi Sultan, Alauddin Khilji.

The producers of the film said, “Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind ‘Padmavati’, has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017.” Their entire statement read, “We are a responsible, law-abiding corporate citizen and have the highest respect and regard for the law of the land and all our institutions and statutory bodies, including the Central Board of Film Certification.”

This was a reaction to the CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi who objected to the filmmakers unprecedented move of privately screening the film for various media channels including for Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, even before obtaining a certificate from the board.

Release only after Gujarat elections?

The political analysts opine that the movie will not be released till after the elections in Gujarat where the BJP is, for the first time seriously threatened by a vibrant opposition.

Meanwhile the Karni sena has called off the Bharat bandh on December 1st. It has been throwing around threats with great impunity to all the actors of the film. The law seems to have gone to sleep.
