R Sooraj, an aerospace engineering PhD student in IIT Madras and member of the Ambedkar Periyar circle was beaten up severely by a group of students during lunch time at a hostel canteen for eating beef and taking part in the beef festival held on the campus. The attackers were Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members who had allegedly issued death threats to all beef eaters on the campus.

The student suffered severe injury to his right eye and was taken to Sankara Nethralaya. He is presently in the Emergency ward of the hospital.

A group of 70-80 students organized the beef festival on the IIT campus in protest against the Centre’s directive, banning cow slaughter saying that it violates personal rights and will badly impact India’s cattle traders, who are mainly Muslims.
