The prestigious National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad which is under the Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) is celebrating its centenary year and has planned a series of seminars, workshops and other events to mark the year-long celebrations.

Report on urban health released

As a part of this, NIN released a report on nutritional status of the country’s urban population on the occasion of the Foundation Day. According to this, out of the surveyed population, 1/6th of the Indian males were found to smoke tobacco and 1/3rd of Indian males consume alcohol. It also showed that 31 % men and 26 % of the women surveyed have hypertension.

Eminent nutrition scientist C. Gopalan, one of the institute’s former directors, who delivered a video message, urged young scientists at the institute to collaborate with scientists from other fields to improve health and nutrition at grass-root level. NIN’s present Director-in-Charge T. Longvah is also an active researcher in nutrition.
