Headed by Telugu producer CV Reddy, the selection committee of the Film Federation of India made the decision to nominate the film, “Newton” as official entry in the Best Foreign film category at the 90th Academy awards. “Newton was chosen unanimously by the committee out of 26 entries. Everyone in the committee liked it,” Mr.Reddy said on Friday, September 22nd.

This film is the story of a government clerk who is determined to hold elections in a Naxal-hit village in Chhattisgarh . Faced with the apathetic attitude of the security forces and the fear of guerrilla attacks by Naxals, he tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the odds. The role is played by Rajkumar Rao.

India has never won a Foreign Language Film Oscar so far. Social media today lauded the decision to nominate Newton and celebrated the decision, hoping that this time the luck will change since a really good film has been selected without bias.
