The terribly low public behaviour to women in general is very well reflected not only in our commercial cinema but highly evident in the words and deeds of the majority of our elected representatives. The TRS MLA of Mahubabad, B. Shankar Naik allegedly behaved rudely with the collector at a public meeting organised during a programme to launch ‘Harita Haaram’ in Mahabubabad on Wednesday.
After the collector filed a complaint stating that “she felt hurt over the MLA’s indecent behaviour after he allegedly touched her hand,”the police filed cases under section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his or her duty) and section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code after the collector who has been identified as Preeti Meena filed a complaint regarding the issue.
The MLA was placed under arrest and later granted bail on a personal bond and he was subsequently released. After release he took part in the ‘Haritha Haram’ programs in the neighbouring mandals.
Women organisations demand stringent action
A rally was taken out in the town of Mahabubabad by women who protested against the MLA’s misbehaviour with the woman officer. The Congress demandes suspension of the MLA.
If the government does not take stringent action to punish the indecent behaviour of its leader, it will be sending very wrong signals to the women of the state.
