The Central government finally acceded to the long standing demand of the Telangana government (for the last 2 years) to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) for the state. The same was announced by the Finance Minister , Arun Jaitley.

It must be recalled that in his budget speech, he announced sanction of AIIMS for only the 2 states of Gujarat and Jharkhand. This drew a lot of flak as Telangana had been demanding the sanction since its inception. TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar sped a letter to Mr. Jaitley the same day and a TRS delegation had also met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to express their demand. Jitender Reddy raised the demand in the House on Thursday.

Again the outskirts of Hyderabad only are being considered for the new institute. The outer ring road at Shamirpet, Shamshabad and Ghatkesar and also the land that was first allotted for Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences at Bibinagar are all being earmarked for transfer to AIIMS.
