The pathbreaking Malayalam–English poet and writer, Kamala Das/Kamala Surayya whose biopic,”My Story” was released today , 1st February in 1976 was honoured with a Google Doodle.

Created by artist Manjit Thapp, the doodle celebrates “the work she left behind, which provides a window into the world of an engrossing woman,” Google said in a blog post.

“I speak three languages, write in two, dream in one”

Kamala Das who wrote both in English and Malayalam,and was considered an inter-lingual writer. She famously said, “I speak three languages, write in two, dream in one.”

She wrote ‘My Story’ in English, and later ‘Ente Katha’ in Malayalam. In this book she deals with issues like female sexuality which was taboo -never talked about until then.

Born a Hindu, she converted to Islam after marrying a much younger Muslim at the age of 65 years. This created plenty of controversies but Kamala Surayya stood firm to her beliefs.

Her biopic is being filmed in Malayalam as “Aami”- with actor Manju Warrier in the role of Kamala Das.
