The number of girls raped at a government shelter home in Muzaffarpur in Bihar has gone up to 34, according to a fresh medical report, triggering a sharp attack on the Nitish Kumar government which had handed over the case to CBI. Ten people have been arrested so far. The NGO which was running the home and its head Brajesh Thakur is now in custody. The names of some ministers/ their husbands who have been regular visitors at the home has also emerged.

Reports of repeated sexual abuse of young girls at a short stay home in Muzaffarpur in Bihar came to the open only after Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) research students’carried out a social audit of shelter homes across Bihar last year and submitted its report in April this year. The government lodged a first information report(FIR)based on this on May 31st .

The horrifying tales of exploitation emerging since then is shocking, to say the least. Members of the Bihar state women commission who met the rescued inmates of Muzaffarpur short stay shelter home at the Mokama Nazareth Academy(where they are now being treated and counselled by experts), said the girls were duped and drugged to keep them silent and allow sexual exploitation. They were also starved and beaten with shoes at any hint of rebellion. One girl was killed for having remained defiant and her body disposed off.
