There has been a case in Gujarat in which G.K General Hospital, run by the Adani Education and Research Foundation, had over a hundred deaths of infants or newborn children recorded. The State Government has ordered an inquiry for a group of officers to look into the case. As per data recorded by the hospital, 111 children have died in 2018, ending 20th of May.

The hospital has cited various reasons for the death of the infants such as- delayed admission and malnutrition in the mother itself. Gujarat commissioner of Health ‘Jayanti Ravi’ has said that a group of experts has been formed and they will look into the matter and soon solve the case. Between January 1st and May 20,th 777 newborns were admitted post birth and those born in the hospital and 111 of them died showing a mortality rate of 14%.

However the hospital, G.K General says that the situation has improved and earlier it was even worse. In 2017 a total of 258 infants died while 184 and 164 infants died in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

All the deaths have been blamed on the mothers and women giving birth to the child claiming that the mother is facing problems of malnutrition or that the baby is too premature. But in 2017 the mortality rate was even more even after the Hospital superintendent saying that it had improved. The mortality percentage in 2016 was 18% and it rose to 21% in 2017.

The following was said by Hospital Superintendent Mr Rao-“One of the reasons for death is premature births, another reason is malnutrition in the mother as they would have not taken a proper diet leading to weight gain of the baby inside the womb.” The situation was also blamed on the reference doctors as he continued to say that the doctors who the women were consulting were not giving the correct advice and sometimes mothers delay reference.

He also stated that if a family comes from 250 kilometers away the chances of survival become even more thin as the time lapse Is just too much. The hospital staff claim to have been working on to solve these problems and reduce all these deaths.
