Two Delhi police officers were found guilty of “mishandling a photo journalist’s camera during crowd control” in the Friday protests led by JNU students and teachers. This step was taken by the Delhi police only after two journalists had filed separate complaints accusing the police of assaulting and molesting reporters at the site of the JNU protest. There was irrefutable evidence in the form of video recording of the incident.
JNU students-the reason for protest march
The students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) chose March 23,( Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev attained martyrdom during India’s freedom struggle on March 23rd) to march to the Parliament demanding a complete overhaul of the university management and suspension of a professor accused of sexual harassment. They were also protesting against a number of administration policies, including the compulsory attendance rule and the removal of several department heads. This students and teachers were manhandled and beaten by the police personnel present at the spot. Some women protesters also claim that they were molested and their clothes were torn off. The students accused the police of using batons against the protestors, injuring many and detaining a few of them.
Delhi police-offence is the best form of defence?
The Delhi Police, itself culpable and accused of violence has taken a defiant posture and have charged 22 JNU students with rioting, obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty, assaulting public servants on duty, damage to public property and using words or gestures to “outrage the modesty of women.”
