Prime Minister Modi, became the first Indian prime minister to visit Israel (a country traditionally shunned by India which has been a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause), six months ago. He has also addressed Netanyahu as a “friend” and invited him to India.
Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in India on January 14th, and is on a six-day trip, becoming the second Israeli prime minister to visit New Delhi and in a “departure from protocol”, Modi received Netanyahu at the Delhi airport on Sunday. All fingers point to a closer embrace of India-US-Israel inspite of the fact that Indiavoted against the U,S in the United Nations.
The war memorial in New Delhi, Teen Murti Chowk was renamed as Teen Murti Haifa Chowk as a symbolic gesture of friendship- 44 Indian soldiers had laid down their lives protecting the Israeli city of Haifa during World War I.
India is also the biggest buyer of Israeli defence equipment
Netanyahu is accompanied by his wife and a 130-member business and trade delegation in his visit. The two nations are expected to formulate agreements on cyber-space, film production and energy.
Israel faces global condemnation as it continues to build illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. But U.S support to the country is strong and India is now becoming a close partner in this alliance.
