The 5 km stretch of road between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence and the Vidhan Sabha in Lucknow was covered with potatoes overnight,on January 5-6th 2018.
In the day, the CM of Uttar Pradesh had claimed at a rally in Meerut that Uttar Pradesh would become the first state in the country to double farmers’ income. He also said farmers of the state worked very hard and needed to be compensated adequately. He accused the previous BSP and Samajwadi Party governments of ignoring farmers’ interests.
Who dumped the potatoes overnight?
Some unidentified persons did the potato-dumping in the night but the climate of fear is such in the state that no farmer body has owned up the protest.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union, which had organised a similar protest last year after demonetisation hit them badly, by symbolically dumping potato and paddy crops outside the Vidhan Sabha, has denied being part of today’s protest.
Farmers feeling betrayed by BJP in UP?
BJP government had not announced the minimum support price for potato despite promising to do so in its manifesto. People are also questioning the priorities of the Yogi government which is eager to celebrate festivals and paint buildings in the saffron party colour but has no concern for the plight of farmers.
