The government has now earmarked October 31st as “Rashtriya Ekta Divas” to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel.
The changed celebrations on Gandhi Jayanthi is the most visible one. No longer is the father of the nation remembered for his secular values that cost him his life. No longer is anyone aware that the bullet that killed him came from a person who believed in Hindu supremacism. The day is now officially marked as Swacch Bharat Divas, linking it to the government’s cleanliness drive.
Similarly Teachers’ Day has also been marked by the government in the name of cleanliness. The BJP is also trying to get the country to mark Christmas as Good Governance Day, as December 25 is also the birth date of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
