Sangeet Som calls Taj Mahal a “blot on Indian culture”

BJP MLA Sangeet Som does it again. In a revealing glimpse into his narrow-minded ideology, he said that the Taj Mahal was built by traitors and is a “blot on Indian culture.”

The second-time MLA from Sardhana, Uttar Pradesh has always been in the limelight for his vociferous and rabid anti-Muslim sentiments. But till date he has never been reigned in by either Yogi Adityanath or the central leadership but was infact used in an extensive election tour in U.P this year by the party.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Reeta Bahuguna Joshi said the Taj Mahal was “part of our cultural heritage and it might be his individual opinion,” she said. “Chief Minister Adityanath and I call it part of our cultural heritage. It is heritage and a major tourist spot. We are committed to the upliftment of Agra and the Taj.”

BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao, however, defended Som. “There have been attempts to distort Indian history,” he said. “It is a symbol of barbarism, and it is a monument.”

It must be remembered here that the U.P government had shockingly left out the Taj Mahal from the State’s official tourism booklet, earlier this month.
