10 coaches of the Kaifiyat Express got derailed near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh around 2.40 am on Wednesday. No deaths have been reported so far but 74 passengers are injured. A team of National Disaster Response Force personnel has been deployed to the site of the accident.

The Kaifiyat Express was on its way to Delhi from Azamgarh. It went off tracks in the early hours on Wednesday morning after colliding with a dumper. The accident occurred at an unmanned railway crossing because of a loader carrying sand for track work.

This is the second train accident in Uttar Pradesh, coming just five days after at least 22 people died and 156 were injured in the derailment of the Kalinga-Utkal Express in Muzaffarnagar last Saturday.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu offers to resign

Taking moral responsibility for the spate of recent train accidents the Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu offered to resign from his post but the final call on the issue will be taken by the Prime Minister who, according to government sources has asked him to wait. News of a cabinet reshuffle is also doing the rounds.
