The elections for the highest post of President were held on Monday and the counting will be on July 20th. Two things stand out in this election.

It recorded 99% voting which is the highest for any election in India. Almost all eligible voters cast their votes in 10 states and the Union territory of Delhi.

Many condescendingly stated that the” good news is that whoever wins will be a person from Scheduled caste.” And this kept being highlighted by our noisy visual media. But is that single qualification enough?

The days of identity alone are over. Some rightly said that the BJP Presidential candidate is a Dalit but not an Ambedkarite. Ambedkar himself was highly critical of the so-called Dalit leaders who worked only for their uplift and not for the upliftment of the hundreds and thousands of Dalits whose life is a uphill struggle. We only see such leaders now who are actually betraying thir community.

The next President surely will be Mr. Ramnath Kovind. He has the necessary numbers and the support of not only the ruling party but all those parties which want to remain in the good books of the Centre. And that leaves Meira Kumar, Jagjivan Ram’s daughter, a fighter and person with a conscience as we saw in her tenure as the Speaker during the Congress regime the loser in this election.

Looking at the previous Presidents of our country and noting their helplessness in the wake of crisis tells us that the person who occupies this post is not such a crucial issue.
