Braithwaite is best remembered for his novel ,“To Sir, With Love” in which he wrote about his experiences as a school teacher while working in the east end of London. His novel talks about the racial and colour discrimination prevalent there. The 1959 autobiographical novel, “To Sir, With Love” was made into a 1967 British drama film of the same title, starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu.
His character, immortalized by the great black actor, Sidney Poitier is one of the inspirational films about a great teacher who perseveres against all odds to teach his students, thus changing their lives forever.
He has written many books and also worked as Guyana’s representative for the UNESCO. Braithwaite’s numerous writings have primarily dealt with the difficulties of being an educated black man, a black social worker, a black teacher, and simply a human being in inhumane circumstances.
